Micromagnetic material characterization allows the non-destructive determination of mechanical and technological material properties and stresses in ferromagnetic materials such as many types of steel or cast iron. The 3MA micromagnetic technology developed at Fraunhofer IZFP is already widely used in industry. However, this technique only considers individual positions – surfaces can only be examined by time-consuming scanning.
The Discover project “MITH“ is testing an idea for using thermographic sensor technology to perform micromagnetic measurements and thus quickly obtain a spatially resolved image of the distribution of, for example, hardness, hardness depth, strength, or stresses. There is great potential for application and utilization in quality assurance and control of industrial processes that can produce locally varying material properties.
