New construction and renovation measure for the further development of the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP (ERDF project no. 25/750301)

Since the start of construction work in 2019, a research and development environment for over 80 employees has been created on a total area of 1700 m². The investment volume of about 19 million euros is financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and the state of Saarland.

In 50 years of constant progress in the field of applied research and development, the Fraunhofer IZFP has reached the limits of its structural capacity on several occasions.  The new construction and refurbishment measures for the structural development of Fraunhofer IZFP, which began in 2019, will systematically drive forward the institute's transformation into a research facility for cognitive sensor systems used in the value chains and life cycles of materials and products. The first construction phase (construction of the new building) was completed with the handover to the Fraunhofer IZFP and the move into the building on June 2, 2022. The second construction phase (refurbishment of the west tower) was officially completed at the beginning of July 2024, marking the end of the major construction project.

The Institute's understanding of technical testing and sensor physics is complemented by technologies and concepts from AI research, which are used to develop sensor systems for the NDT of tomorrow. In addition to pure production processes, R&D activities focus equally on processes from materials and product development, maintenance, servicing and recycling of materials.

In addition, the institute's work is incorporated into the newly founded Fraunhofer Center for Sensor Intelligence ZSI, which is operated jointly by the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT and the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP. The new construction and expansion measure will also create the structural prerequisites for this.
