Range of Services

Support and counseling of internal and external library customers

Recherche instructions and training using staged professional databases and additional information sources in order to promote information competency

Development and allocation of a full-featured online library catalogue with stark valorization of full texts and digitized material.

Selection of online journals, e-books, proceedings, technical databases and further information sources plus their integration in both, primed search systems and the institute's intranet

Topical inquiries for technical literature, patents, economic data, facts and news concerning scientific research and project work using relevant information sources associated with the respective research areas and branches

eLIB is an acronym for Enhanced Library Services

Premium research is in need of optimally endorsed scientists! Any research project relies on the prior inquiry for technical information: The ever faster, ever more efficient and complete access to specialized information as well as the optimal involvement of the local technical information management becomes a growing factor for the priority of research projects.

By eLib, future searching for local technical information sources and licensed journals or Fraunhofer database access will be a lot easier and up to date. Besides an enhanced search for "discovery technology", the direct linking to full texts (LinkResolve) and the implementation of a modern library software were realized for all institutes.

Supervision of the publishing processes in the institute

  • Supporting the search for an adequate publication medium including any necessary clarifying of basic conditions or specific publishing conditions
  • Answering questions on rights of use and copyright.
  • Counselling on the implementation of Fraunhofer's Open Access Policy

Open Access means the free and long-term access to scientific results and literature, leading to increased visibility of research results and thus to better promotion of innovation activities. There are two versions: Open Access Gold (initial publication in an approved and appraised Open Acces journal) and Open Access Grün (secondary publication at no charge, parallel or time-delayed in an institutional or technical repository after initial publication which is not freely accessible). Both Open Access variants share the free digital accessibility of texts and objects.

Questions concerning the topic will be answered by Ms Birgit Conrad-Markschläger, or by phone under +49 681 9302 1004

Compilation of citation statistics and bibliometrical analyses for internal or comprehensive purposes

  • WTI-Frankfurt (Scientific Technical Information, formerly FIZ-Technik) gives you access to the bibliographical databases TEMA (technics and management) and INSPEC (physics, elektro-technics, computer engineering).
  • In the framework of a cross-institutional contract, all employees of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft have access to the IEEE / IET Electronic Library (IEL) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. IEL provides approximately one third of the worldwide topical literature in electronics, engineering and computer sciences since 1988 (partially since 1950) with over 1.2 million full text docments from IEEE and IEE proceedings or journals, including 'IEEE Spectrum' and 'Proceedings of the IEEE', and from the current IEEE standards.
  • An advantage of Web of Science over pure technical databases can be seen in its interdisciplinary approach, ie the broad spectrum of hard and soft sciences, technological development, medicine and social sciences. All heavy-weight scientific journals of these fields are evaluated. Furthermore, WoS provides ways to establish the citation occurrence of a publication, of an author or of an institution.
  • SCOPUS is a multi-disziplinary Elsevier database with approximately 27 million excerpts covering the last 40 years. The fields comprise hard and social sciences, technical engineering, medicine, economics and jurisprudence.
  • Science Direct (Elsevier sciences)
  • Fraunhofer-Publica lists publications of all Fraunhofer institutes and provides search functionality.
  • Since 2004, in the framework of its cross-regional literature supply, DFG's support program includes digital publications, and for the first time in 2006, German research institutions were included into the licensing program of products for technical information. Thus, the scientists and employees of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft now have the chance for uncharged use of these new information sources, eg by access to a series of specialized databases and past issues of electronical journals (backfile archives).
  • MARKUS delivers comprehensive, reliant and up-to-date business information on 900,000 German and Austrian enterprises as listet in the trade register. MARKUS allows the analysis of the annual accounts of 20,000 enterprises.
  • ELFI is the service prodider for electronic information on research funding in the German-speaking world. ELFI arose at the Ruhr University Bochum. At times, it was financed by the former North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry for Science and Research. Since 2004, ELFI earns its funds from the user charges.
