To mark the European Materials Day 2025, the German Society for Materials Science (DGM) is organizing a virtual competition for outstanding master’s theses in materials science and engineering. This event offers young members of our community the opportunity to present their research results to a broad professional audience and to actively engage with the wider materials science network.
With this initiative, the DGM aims to recognize academic excellence at the master’s level and to nominate one candidate to represent Germany at the Junior EUROMAT 2026. The winner of the first prize will have the chance to present their work on a European stage and connect with emerging researchers from across the continent.
A total of nine candidates will be selected to present their work in concise online talks. Each presentation should not exceed 20 minutes, followed by 5 minutes for questions and discussion. A jury of experts will evaluate the presentations and award prizes to the top three. Beyond the competition, the event fosters exchange, visibility, and encouragement for the next generation of materials scientists.
Nomination Guidelines
Each university institute or chair may submit one nomination. For reasons of fairness and equal representation, multiple nominations from the same institution are not permitted. Eligible candidates must have completed and submitted their master’s thesis in 2024 or early 2025 – in any case, at least six months before the deadline on 30 September 2025. At the time of nomination, the thesis must already have been formally assessed and graded.
Nominations can be submitted via the DGM submission portal.
