Against the background of the discussions on "Industry 4.0" and the effects of increasing digitisation on the classical NDT, Fraunhofer IZFP has responded to the corresponding far-reaching change: A straight educible consequence of this change is the rapidly growing data volume (Big Data), which will result in the fact
- that data as a new raw material of the future will gain more and more importance and
- that information from these data can no longer be extracted solely by standard methods of pattern recognition due to their size and complexity.
Hence, the department's primary task is to develop technologies able to use this exploding resource to extract precisely usable, relevant information (Relevant Data) as quickly as possible: Information from arbitrary sensor systems must be selected simultaneously so that the data acquisition – based on the intelligently extracted knowledge – can be adapted to derive measures for concrete tasks, such as process control and optimization of underlying processes.
